Artificial
Grass
Standard or Basic Installation Procedures
Standard or Basic Installation Procedures
- Before installing artificial
grass, remove all grass,
sod, rock or roots, mulch, sand and large
rocks. The area should be smooth, leveled
and firm. Your sub base will be 3 in.
below top of grade elevation. So remove
any material within the top 3 in. below
your desired elevation
- Mark out the entire work area with marking point.
- Frame in the entire installation area with a 2 x 2 re-cycled flex board, making sure the top of the board is flush with your desired finish grade. Anchor the 2 x 2 flex plastic board with 12'' deep plastic stakes. Stakes should be spaced appropriately so that the top of the board can not move up or down. Make sure if you are installing next to a concrete curbing, sidewalk or landscape border, space the 2 x 2 approximately 1/8 of an in. away from the concrete so later you can tuck in your edges
- Cap of any irrigation or sprinklers that are no longer needed. If you are going to have plants, trees or shrubs, inside the work area. Re-route necessary irrigation links to desired locations. Also, tie into any existing drain systems. Be sure to keep any natural flow lines for flow through drainage.
- Import your sub base material, 3 inches in depth, (Decomposed Granite is our recommended sub base material) Class II base makes a nice sub base as well. Level and compact your 3 inches of D.G. use small amount of water to set compaction to a minimum of 85%.
- Lay and install weed barrier over entire work area, overlapping at least 6 inches over each piece and ½ over edge of concrete. Anchor weed barrier down with 5 inch. Nails or 5 inch staples. (Use a root barrier when installing adjacent to a tree)
- In areas that have "severe" gopher or large rodents use a chicken wire mesh after weed barrier.
- Before cutting your pieces of synthetic
grass, please measure your
area twice cut a 1 inch overlap on length
and width and recognize that all artificial
grass's have a memory to lay in one direction,
so remember it's critical that when you
seam pieces together. Make sure they are
all laying in the same direction. ( Backyards
face the home, front yards face the street)
- Cut the size to fit within your work area. Before placing your cut pieces, trim off any excess backing that extends past the stitched row. Always cut form the back. As close to the stitching as possible without cutting into the stitch. Cut a straight line. (Do not cut any of the synthetic green grass).
- Line up the pieces first, anchor the pieces with 8'' to 12'' spikes temporarily just to hold the pieces firmly in places while you secure the seams and snug up the edges. (Before anchoring, start at one end with anchors holding end in place, be sure to move away from the stakes w/knee kickers or turf clamps and pull or kick any wrinkles or ripples out of the entire grass pieces)
- Once snug all the way across, tuck the edges with you tucking tool (between that 1/8 inch gap between your framed border and the concrete) then using a Pneumatic staple gun, with a minimum of 1'' staples. Staple edges every 4'' inches on center.
- Seams to ensure this part of the installation goes well place smooth clean edges no more than a ¼ '' apart use 5 inch flat headed sod staples every 6'' inches on center for the entire length of seam.
- Remove 8'' to 12'' spikes. Lightly power brush grass so it's standing straight of seam.
- Before applying infill (rubber and sand) make sure all edges are tucked in seams are not visible, and all spikes are removed.
- Using the drop spreader spread 1 pound of ground cleaned rubber per square foot, evenly and brush in with regular push brooms. We recommend using green rubber over the black in residential applications because of heat displacement.
- After brushing in all of the rubber infill evenly spread 1 to 2 lbs. per square foot of cleaned/washed green sand. (finer grit sand are preferable)
- Wash your total installation down with water. A small amount of infill might be noticeable for a few weeks. However, that's preferable because of settlement.
